Friday Food for Thought

30th May 2025

This week at Chipping Barnet Foodbank we have turned our attention to equity, diversion and inclusion (EDI).

DI in the context of a food bank refers to principles and practices that ensure equitable access to food assistance while respecting and embracing the diversity of the community we serve.

EDI is important because food insecurity disproportionately affects marginalised communities who have diverse needs. An understanding of EDI not only in theory, but in practice, serves our community by ensuring the best accessibility to our service (for example, 76% of people accessing Trussell food banks are either disabled or live with somebody who is disabled), makes sure any representation made on behalf of our community is relevant, and places front and centre a dignified and compassionate service.

We are proud to announce that this week members of the Chipping Barnet Foodbank community will partner with the Head of EDI at Trussell to understand our own position when it comes to EDI. We will be working through facilitated workshops to identify those practices we do well and identify opportunities to further enhance our service.

During the Summer months we are planning to go a step further by offering a series of EDI workshops for our partners in the community.
